The entire sector of home ornamental plants may be shocked by the epidemic of coronavirus.
Moderate demand leads to the fact that manufacturers and traders lose from 60% to 70% of annual sales. A professional organization has already prepared its proposals for saving the crisis, and mitigation measures are currently being discussed with the Ministry of Agriculture.
At flower auctions, the price of a flower is always considered for 1 stalk.
About 60–70% of the annual sales volume will have to be reduced due to home ornamental plants due to the epidemic of coronavirus. Laszlo Orloči, president of the Association of Hungarian Ornamental Gardeners, said that since spring is the main growing and marketing season, the pandemic has seriously affected the sector. According to the expert, the current crisis threatens the death of many enterprises. Since most people do not have reserves, a fall of 60–70% means bankruptcy, and renewal without any force majeure is almost impossible, writes Magyar Nemzet.
The association estimates that the sector’s annual income is around 622 million dollars, of which the turnover of flower shops is about 155 million. According to the president, in large horticultural and flower shops there is little traffic, only for meetings with customers in small shops or directly from manufacturers.
However, during this period, people stuck in their homes, it would be more important than ever to find a good rest. Gardening, whether in the garden or on the balcony, is a useful activity not only physically, but also mentally. That is why the association wants to promote home gardening through a campaign in the near future.
