RThe decision of the General Court of the European Union determined that the European Food Safety Authority should not restrict public access to studies regarding the likely adverse effects of the popular glyphosate herbicide on humans.
This decision was made on the suit of the European Parliament deputies from environmental parties about the lack of transparency of glyphosate studies and suspected carcinogenicity of the drug, that is, the effect of the drug can cause malignant tumors in humans and animals.
According to the statement of the General Court of the EU, the public has the right to access information about prepart emissions, as well as about the medium and long term effects of these emissions. In 2015, glyphosate, used in the fight against weeds, was already recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as “probably consonant with humans,” but this point of view on the drug is not shared by other specialized agencies.
At the end of 2017, the European Commission extended the registration of glyphosate until 2022, but at the same time, the European Parliament approved the creation of a special committee to study the issue of the possible harmful effects of the drug.
