Producers who were severely affected by the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011, first gathered a batch of high-quality bananas and expect them to restore agricultural production in the city. These bananas were grown in Hirono, Fukushima Prefecture and harvested on August 19.
The price of one banana will be about 300 yen, which is equivalent to $ 2.80. Farmers decided to call this banana "Kirei", which means "beautiful."
The launch of a unique banana is a long-awaited moment for local farmers and residents. The city is located on the Pacific coast south of the Hamadori area, and local agricultural sales fell sharply after a nuclear accident caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
“No one could have imagined this banana crop eight and a half years ago when the tsunami and nuclear accident occurred,” said Fukushima Governor Masao Uchibori, who was present at the harvest.
Local residents have high hopes for the collected products. They consider this the first step towards recovery from the 2011 disaster. By the next spring, about 35,000 bananas with edible skin will be harvested in Fukushima.
The city plans to once again return to the important position of the agricultural region, expanding sales of such unusual bananas produced in Fukushima Prefecture.
The city plans to produce about 200 thousand expensive bananas over the next three years. They are planned to be sold at the farmers' market in the Futatsunuma complex park in Hirono, as well as in the J-Village sports complex located in the cities of Naraha and Hirono, the Hawaiians spa resort in Iwaki and department stores in Tokyo.
