This year, the Valencian company Viveros Hernandorena will double the production of pomegranate seedlings - from 60 thousand.
“We want the industry to be known as the leading pomegranate nursery, and this cannot be achieved without volume, quality and uniformity,” said Rosa Hernandorena, Managing Director of Viveros Hernandorena.
The seedlings of this nursery are made on the basis of a special production system. This is an internal logged system in which plants are placed so that the trunk remains straight.
“Periodic pruning is also carried out on the side shoots earlier than was done by traditional methods. Thus, the scraps are reduced in size and heal long before the start, so they do not become by the penetration of pests and diseases, ”says the expert.
“For some time now, the market has been looking for intense red varieties that are sweet. Until now, the dominant variety was the traditional mollar, which is sweet, but has a weak color both inside and outside. Then came pomegranates, such as Wonderful, which are very attractive in their bright red color but have a sour taste.
Now we are preparing the launch of two new varieties: Iliana (early) and Rugalate (late), red inside and out, with inconspicuous seeds and high degrees of brix, developed by the Valencia Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA), ”explains Rosa Hernandorena.
“We believe that with these varieties the pomegranate market will continue to grow. Prices are stabilizing again, which is confirmed by manufacturers adhering to a good production and marketing strategy, ”she says.
Viveros Hernandorena organizes technical visits to its facilities in the municipality of Benimodo in Valencia from late August to early November.
