Pacific Trellis Fruit, California-based agricultural producer, sells its new PureHeart seedless watermelons grown in cold greenhouses. They do not touch the soil during cultivation.
Pacific Trellis Fruit is testing a new method in collaboration with its regular growing partner Agroexport, in which Dulcinea PureHaert watermelons are grown on vertical sticks in a cold greenhouse, not in the soil, which is the traditional way of growing watermelons.
Using sticks yields a 30% higher yield in a cold greenhouse, which is covered with shade cloth to protect watermelons from damage by the strong sun, strong winds and insects.
“By cultivating our seedless PureHeart watermelons vertically on sticks in a cold greenhouse, we can protect them from threats, resulting in higher yields and higher quality fruits,” said Josh Leichter, manager of Pacific Trellis Fruit.
This method of cultivation has a positive impact on the environment, since vertical treatment requires less water and soil.
In the warm summer months, the cold greenhouse helps protect the fruit, and in the winter months, warm air is maintained so that watermelons grow better.
PureHeart vertically grown seedless watermelons are currently available in limited quantities on the market.
