Stuart Roberts, vice president of the National Farmers Union of Great Britain (NFU), said rural mental health support will become increasingly important as the agricultural industry faces some of its most serious problems.
Speaking at the Royal Agricultural Charity Institution (RABI) annual general meeting on May 15, Stuart Roberts emphasized that Brexit and its associated problems, as well as the impact of climate change, can affect the mental well-being of farmers.
He emphasized the need to increase the resources of the NHS in rural areas to help those struggling with their mental problems.“The British agricultural industry is on the verge of important changes, not only nationwide in connection with Brexit, but also in the global fight against climate change. These problems, along with the extremely diverse problems that the farming business entails, can be incredibly stressful and negatively affect mental well-being. And, like many people, this is an area that farmers are often reluctant to talk about, ”said NFU Vice President.
“Many farmers who struggle with their mental problems have turned to charitable organizations for help, and these services will undoubtedly become even more important in the future. But this should go beyond charitable support. We need the government to provide more medical resources in rural communities so that farmers can get the help they need and need, ”concluded Stuart Roberts.
