Employees of the State Agrarian University of Kherson came to the conclusion that in the south of Ukraine there are almost catastrophically shortage of farms for growing oysters and mussels.
“Experts will confirm that the Black Sea, which washes the shores of Ukraine, has every chance for the successful creation of such farms,” said Pavel Kutishchev, candidate of biological sciences, associate professor of Kherson University. “And if we have such farms, we can refuse expensive purchases of imported seafood and consume our own, environmentally friendly mussels and oysters!”
According to Kutishchev, the cultivation and breeding of mussels and oysters brings good income and raises the level of economy of those countries that have access to the Black Sea and are actively using its advantages.

“But this is not only about satisfying the gastronomic needs of Ukraine,” Kutishchev is convinced. - Not many people know that one mussel filters about 100 liters of water per day! Once in the Black Sea there were many settlements of mussels, and the transparency of the water reached twenty meters. Today, under the best conditions, water transparency does not exceed five meters! ”
According to analysts, 40-50 years ago in Ukraine there were farms of mussels and oysters. They were located in the Crimea, Odessa and Kherson regions. However, over time and with cutbacks in funding, farms have closed. Today, the industry recovery process is developing extremely slowly. The Ukrainian scientific and agricultural community is convinced: the situation must be radically changed in the shortest possible time!
