The Brazilian government said Thursday, June 13, that it was canceling the suspension of beef exports to China imposed after an atypical case of mad cow disease revealed in Brazil.
This decision led to a sharp increase in the shares of Marfrig Global Foods, Minerva SA and other Brazilian meat producers.
The suspension of Brazilian meat exports to China has been in effect since June 3, after a case of mad cow disease in a 17-year-old cow in the state of Mato Grosso was recorded. It should be noted that individual cases of this disease in cattle herds can occur spontaneously, and usually in animals aged 8 years and older.
Agriculture Minister Teresa Cristina Diaz said on her Twitter that Brazil will resume issuing international health certificates for the export of beef to China.
China is the only country among Brazilian importers to comply with a medical protocol requiring suspension of beef imports when an atypical case of mad cow disease is reported, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement.
The ministry reiterated the intention of the Brazilian government to agree with the Chinese authorities on a new health protocol to address this problem.
