It is expected that tomorrow, July 10, thousands of farmers from the Irish county of Roscommon will gather in Dublin for one of the largest farming demonstrations on the streets of the capital of Ireland for many years.
About 2,000 county farmers in the capital tomorrow will protest against the EU’s planned beef deal, known as an agreement with Mercusor.
The agreement will allow importing up to 99,000 tons of beef into the EU, which, according to local farmers, will have disastrous consequences for the livestock beef sector as a whole and for farmers.
“This is no longer an agricultural problem. This is a problem for rural Ireland. Small villages and cities, such as Elfin and Strokstown, will be destroyed if this transaction becomes a reality. The deal will also destroy agriculture as a whole, ”the organizers said.
John O'Bairn, chairman of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) committee on beef in Roscommon County, said the deal with Mercusor exacerbates the uncertainty that farmers face with Brexit.
“Cattle are currently sold at prices ranging from 365 to 375 cents per kilogram - cattle cannot be raised for this money. Farmers are currently happy to break even, but most are losing money, ”said the chairman of the Irish Beef Farmers Association committee in Roscommon County.
