Each homeowner wants his plot to look neat and beautiful. To do this, look after the garden and make a fence. In addition, garden borders for paths and flower beds can be made of all kinds of materials, even from improvised means. Just show a little imagination and you get a nice interior.
Types of curbs for garden paths and their installation
A border is a low hedge that is used in gardening as a decoration, and also as a separation of walkways from beds and flower beds.
- Moreover, a cottage with beautifully designed fences not only looks harmoniously, but they also benefit:
- Design flaws and design flaws are removed;
- prevent the growth of vegetation;
- emphasize the beauty of the site;
- protect trails from erosion during rain;
- fix tracks, extending their service life;
- do not allow sand from under the path to be on the site.
Made of bricks
Brick is often used as paving and curbs. Moreover, the track made of this material does not require large expenditures and it is easy to lay it out with your own hands. Despite its simplicity, wall material in the open air will not be durable. To extend its service life, it is necessary to treat the brick with a special moisture-proof varnish.
Important! Validity of waterproofing agents is about 5 years. After this, the material should be reprocessed.
Another option, but already more costly, will be the purchase of a special clinker brick. It practically does not allow moisture to pass through, therefore it will not collapse over time, and the garden plot with its use will acquire a beautiful appearance.
Brick curbs can be made in the following ways:
- dig straight or at an angle;
- put on a cement mortar in one or more lines;
- make a border with a barrier for the lawn.
Necessary tools for installing a brick border:
- shovel;
- tamper;
- container for mixing the mixture;
- roulette;
- cord for marking;
- pegs;
- construction trowel;
- rubber mallet.
Be that as it may, but the most popular are the fencing, which do so:
- Dig a trench 10 cm deep.
- A rope is pulled at a height of half a brick.
- Concrete mortar is poured on one side and a brick is placed at an angle.
- The mortar and the next briquette are placed on the brick so that its upper edge is in the middle of the first.
- Set all other bricks in the same way.
- At the end, the pit is buried and rammed.
A border of any shape made of brick must be placed on the cement mixture. Otherwise, the finished structure will quickly collapse.
From wood
Despite the fact that you can buy ready-made wooden borders in stores, there are options to make them yourself. Wood can be burned, painted and treated with raw materials for landscape design. It is only necessary to show a little imagination in order to get a rather creative idea of decor for the garden. Moreover, many varieties of wood are used for tracks.
- Wooden borders perfectly fulfill their functions and have great advantages:
- beautiful appearance;
- many installation options;
- strength;
- even the remnants of building materials are used;
- easy to install;
- environmentally friendly material.
This material has a small drawback - fragility. Even if the wood is treated with protective antiseptic agents before installation, the service life will be no more than 10 years. Installation does not require much effort, so even an inexperienced gardener can do the job. It is necessary to dig a hole, make a drainage pillow and put material for waterproofing, on which a wooden border will be installed.
Plastic borders
A flowerbed with a plastic fence will be a unique addition to any personal plot, since the material is inexpensive. However, the border perfectly performs its functions, while the path has strict contours and will not creep. In addition, the assembly is completely uncomplicated, only special anchor clips are needed. No additional tools required.
- The plastic border has several advantages:
- resistant to moisture and temperature extremes;
- easy to install and disassemble;
- no need to prepare the soil;
- polymer material is durable;
- not destroyed by contact with compositions for irrigation of plants;
- low price of the material;
- large selection of size, shape and color.
The only significant drawback is the synthetic material and low mechanical stability. However, plastic does not do any harm to humans and plants, so this material is so popular.
Did you know? To get a stylized concrete path "antique", you need to rub it with yogurt or kefir, which will lead to the rapid growth of moss.
Flexible rubber borders
Soft rubber fencing is mainly used to strengthen various structures, as well as to fix the structure and quicksand along the contour. Mounting is usually done on cement mortar, and the surface acquires a smooth line by tapping on top with a rubber mallet.
- A flexible rubber border has the following advantages:
- elastic, therefore safety;
- resistance to ultraviolet rays;
- large palette of colors;
- good wear resistance;
- no special care required;
- shape and color does not change during operation;
- wear resistance;
- it is easily cleared of ice.
The life of a rubber lip is approximately 15 years. A significant drawback is the fact that rubber becomes unusable under strong mechanical stress.
Made of stone
Natural stone is a rational curb material because it has high aesthetic qualities, strength and durability, as well as resistance to all types of impacts. Any household territory will look spectacular. In addition, the stones are characterized by rare color, so choosing the right option and the right size will be quite easy. However, the material is not cheap, so the cost of money will be much higher than when using other raw materials.
To build a stone border is not difficult. To do this, a pit breaks out, a drainage layer is created and compacted. Agrofibre should also be used so that grass does not sprout through the curb. The laying of the stone should be carried out closely to each other, and a smaller fraction should fall asleep between them.
Metal
The metal border is one of the most reliable and capital fences, which serves as an inconspicuous fence for paths. Typically, the material is supplied in the form of a tape of steel, copper or aluminum. The installation process is quite simple, the elements are inserted into the ground so that no more than 2 cm of material is left on top.
Important! The biggest drawback of the metal border is the high price, so many people prefer plastic fencing.
- Among the advantages:
- durability and reliability;
- maintaining the shape of the path;
- easy installation;
- invulnerability to high temperatures;
- The material is harmless to the soil.
Pouring concrete curbs
Many gardeners in suburban areas use concrete curbs. The popularity is due to the fact that the material is inexpensive, easy to care for and has a characteristic strength. Moreover, they can be made with one's own hand. However, due to the large weight, installation is not so simple, and careful preparation of the soil is required. There are not many varieties of concrete blocks on sale, so you can fill them yourself in ready-made or home-made forms if you wish.
To do this, you will need:
- Pour a not too thin solution (1 part cement and 4 parts sand) into the mold.
- When pouring, monitor the removal of bubbles that make the product less durable.
- The border can be removed from the mold after a few hours, when the solution hardens well.
- You can use the made borders in a day, when they are completely dry.
The easiest way to make a concrete fence is to fill the mortar with the help of formwork. This process will save a lot of time, but the result will not be very decorative.
Procedure:
- Dig a trench of the required length and width.
- Install the formwork using a sanded board, plastic or steel.
- Fix the structure with pegs and pour cement mortar.
- Smooth the resulting surface.
- Remove formwork after concrete has hardened.
- To prevent cracking, expansion joints are made in increments of 100-150 cm.
While the concrete has not hardened, it can be decorated with pebbles, mosaics, as well as small fragments of ceramic tiles. Such edging is usually used for asphalt, bulk or made from improvised materials paths.
Did you know? In 2001, the Hungarian architect Aron Loshontsi invented an innovative material - transparent concrete. It is impossible to see everything through it, like through glass, but the material is much lighter, transmits light and retains the necessary properties.
Options for creating from materials at hand
If the financial situation does not allow to construct a practical and decorative garden border from the above materials, improvised materials can be used.
Useless interior items are perfect:
- Slate, which remained after replacing the roof, will be an excellent fence for the flowerbed. Building material is dug into the ground and supported by rods.
- Decking it is steady against corrosion therefore it will serve as a frame for a long time.
- Composition from plastic bottles will harmoniously look in the garden. To do this, dig the containers with their neck down. However, this option is not distinguished by durability, so it is better to use glass containers.
- Car tires partially dig into the ground and well rammed. They are also used in strips, which are fixed on the bars, recessed into the ground. For greater stability, it is better to install the structure on a cement mortar.
Features of installing a border for a flower bed
The installation of fencing does not require special skills, therefore, everyone will cope with this work. The one exception is concrete structures. Most options use the same tools. The first step is marking the territory and driving a peg, after which the cord is pulled.
The depth of the ditch depends on the height of the tile relative to the ground. After this, the bottom is compacted, a sand-gravel mixture is poured and compacted again. The installed material is adjusted to each other with a special rubber hammer to set the level. A day later, the cracks between the curb and the ground are filled with sand, after which everything is carefully compacted.
The border performs the main function - prevents the spread of soil. Also, it facilitates the work of leveling the land and designing a summer cottage. Whatever material is chosen for the fence, the main thing is to show a little imagination, and then you can create a harmonious design for the garden. Indeed, it is always pleasant to walk along well-groomed paths. If you can’t do the necessary work yourself, you can always seek help from a specialist who can help build the necessary fence.
